I don’t need a new car and I probably won’t be getting one for quite a while, but I really want a Volvo. I’ve never driven one or even knew someone who had one, but I just want to own one for a little while to see what they’re like.
And this is a nice looking !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

My first car was a Volvo S40. It was nice. Very comfortable, decent handling, reasonably efficient, good looking IMO. If it had a stick I would probably still have it, they make a very good daily, but I was really sick of the auto so I moved on.

If you look at one be sure to drive the turbo. I haven’t driven an NA version, but my guess is that it would be kind of blah. The turbo, on the other hand, is a hoot.

Look for a T5 if you want a P1 (S40, C30, V50, C70) the turbo makes it so much more fun. The 2.4 is just a little meh.
Source- owned a 2008 C30 T5

My first car was a 2.4i slushbox, it wasn’t horrible but not at all exciting from a driving standpoint. Being my first car, it was incredibly exciting from an experience standpoint but that holds true for any first car.

I hear you. My first car was a 1982 Volvo 240DL. Something like 89 tractor-engined horse power. I loved that thing. I have a 2008 C30 now and it’s fun with a tune and a 6 speed.

First car was a 2005 V50 2.4i auto. Amazing little car. Needs a bit of work if you get a higher mileage car, but one of Volvo’s best chassis, thanks to Ford/Mazda. The 2.4i is very much a slow-car-fast kind of vehicle, you really need to rev it up to get it going and work the Geartronic if it’s an auto, but it’s rather satisfying when you nail it on a twisty road. I now drive a terrifyingly powerful XC70 w/ Polestar tune but I always go back the the little NA V50 if I’m going for a evening drive. If you’re used to effortless power, the 2.4i is not for you as it requires a bit of planning ahead, but I personally love having a slow car on hand. I used to wish for a T5, but the XC70 has taught me that speed doesn’t solve everything, and I can drive the 2.4i at 9/10ths even near the speed limit in the twisties. I don’t think the car feels as sharp if you’re used to Japanese handling and controls, but by my rekoning it’s an incredibly endearing little machine.

Note that this generation of compact Volvo is on essentially the same platform (Ford C1) as the Ford Focus MkII (European only) and Mazda 3 MkI. The later ones are on the Ford Global C platform, which is also shared with later generations of Focus, 3, and other cars from both.
